7 Indian Players Who Won An Olympic Medal At The Tokyo Olympics 2020

There is no doubt that the Tokyo Olympics 2020 was one of the best performances delivered by India. The Tokyo Olympics 2020 started on 23rd July 2021 and ended on 8th August 2021, and Indian players made sure that this Olympics is counted. The Olympic games are held in summer and winter, and it's a pride for any country to win even a single Olympic Medal. 



The first Olympic games were held on 6th April 1896 in Athens, Greece. The modern Olympic games revival was done by a French educator Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who presented the idea of conducting Olympic games in Paris in 1894, which was accepted unanimously. Greece is also known as the homeland of the ancient Olympic games since it is believed that the 'Olympiad' was held in the Olympia region of Greece, 2,800 years ago.  

While there are a lot of opinions about the origins of the ancient Olympic games, the one that is widely believed is that there was an artistic and athletic festival which ended in 393 AD. The very famous logo of the Olympic games actually denotes five continents of the world, and it was created by Baron de Coubertin.  

On 8th August, the Tokyo Olympics 2020 got over, and India finished with a medal tally which was the best in 40 years. While India finished the Olympic Medal tally at the 48th position, the list was topped by the USA. The next Olympic games is scheduled to happen in Paris, France, in 2024.  

The world's leading sports event, which is organized by the International Olympic Committee, saw the Indian flag 7 times, meaning that India won 7 medals - 1 Olympic Gold Medal, 2 Olympic silver medals and 4 Olympic bronze medals. Indian players delivered a terrific performance, so lets' look at the journey of the seven samurai of India: 

Neeraj Chopra 

Neeraj Chopra secured India's first OlympicGold Medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 in Javelin Throw, which touched 87.58m. Neeraj Chopra joined the Indian Army in 2016 and became subedar Neeraj Chopra. This was a historic win as India secured an Olympic gold medal in elusive athletics after a 100-year long wait.  

Mirabai Chanu 

With a monstrous 202-kg combined lift in the 49-kg weightlifting category, Mirabai Chanu secured a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Chanu belongs from Manipur, who gained all the strength by carrying the firewood in the hills. Her strength was noticed by former international weightlifter and coach Anita Chanu, and that's how Mirabai's journey began.  

Ravi Kumar Dahiya 

Ravi Kumar Dahiya gave a terrific performance in the men's freestyle 57 kg event at the Tokyo Olympics and secured a silver medal for the country. He is 2nd ever Indian wrestler to secure an Olympic medal in wrestling after Sushil Kumar.  

Men's Hockey Team 

People went gaga when India's men hockey team won a bronze medal as India waited for 41 years to get an Olympic medal in hockey. The last time India won an Olympic medal in hockey was in 1980 when the hockey team secured gold.  

PV Sindhu 

Ace badminton player PV Sindhu secured a bronze medal and became the only Indian badminton player to win two Olympic medals.  

Lovlina Borgohain 

Lovlina Borgohain secured a bronze medal in boxing, becoming the third Indian boxer to do so. 



Bajrang Punia

Bajrang Punia secured a bronze medal, becoming the only Indian wrestler to have won three championship medals.
